Strategies to Avoid Leaving
Your Precious Cargo in a Vehicle

Change Your Mindset

Everyone needs to realize this could happen to anyone. Please pick a combination of these strategies and request anyone who transports your child to vow to use the strategies as well.

Change It Up

Use several strategies and change them regularly.

Train Your Brain

"One Shoe On, One Shoe Off"

Place your left shoe in the back seat with your child while driving until you get to your destination.

Cuddle Buddy

Keep a designated stuffed animal in the car seat/base at all times. When you put your child in the vehicle, hold the stuffed animal in your lap when driving, then place back in car seat/base when you get your child out. Keep a stuffed animal at your work that you need to move before working.

It Takes a Village

Ask your daycare provider to call you if you have not dropped off within 20 minutes of your normal time. Have other caregivers who transport your child use strategies to remember your most precious cargo.

Look Before You Lock

Always look in the back window before you lock the car and walk away.

Be Smart, Use your Smartphone

Set an alarm for 5 minutes after you start work.

Get Techie

Explore different car seats that have built-in technology, camera systems, etc.

There’s an App for That

Find an app that works for you that has been developed to remind you to check the backseat (Waze, The Backseat App, etc.).

Visual Reminders

Use a wristband, window decal, etc. to remind you about your child in the backseat.

Baby’s Belongings

Hold your child’s blanket, shoes, favorite toy, etc. in your lap while driving. Place your purse, wallet, phone, etc. in the back seat near the child.

Mission Accomplished

Send a quick text to your spouse/friend to let them know that you dropped off your child at daycare. If your person does not hear from you within 10 minutes of the expected time, they call you to check.
